Retaining walls and block walls in Long Beach and Lakewood

A retaining wall holds back soil and water, and water is what knocks walls over. Footing size, steel, drainage behind the wall and weep holes matter as much as the face you see.

FAQ

Retaining and Block Walls questions

When does a retaining wall need a permit?

In many California cities, walls retaining more than about 4 feet of soil, or any wall supporting a surcharge like a driveway or slope, need a permit and engineering. Check your city's rule; we confirm it before quoting.

Why do retaining walls fail?

Mostly water. Without drainage behind the wall, wet soil pushes harder than the wall was built for. Gravel, fabric and a drain pipe fix that.

Block wall or poured concrete?

Block walls are the common choice for most residential heights. Poured walls make sense for taller or engineered walls and specific finishes.

Can you build a wall on the property line?

Yes, with the neighbor's agreement and within city height limits. We recommend a survey if the line isn't clear.
